TAQA Joins the UN Global Compact Initiative

Membership builds on its sustainability commitments

In line with its strong commitment to contributing to the global sustainability agenda and to becoming a low-carbon power and water champion, TAQA has today joined the UN Global Compact Initiative.

The UN Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, encourages businesses and firms worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies and to report on their implementation.

As a signatory, TAQA will complete an annual Communication on Progress (COP) submission, demonstrating its progress in working toward the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. Joining the initiative reinforces TAQA’s deepening commitment to ESG principals.

The energy sector plays an important role in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and lies at the heart of climate action. As such, TAQA has made significant decarbonization strides in recent years, investing heavily in renewables both in the UAE and abroad while pioneering partnerships with the industrial sector to support hard to abate sectors.

TAQA’s Noor Abu Dhabi is one of the largest solar plants in the world, and the company’s 2GW Al Dhafra will be close to twice the size, generating enough energy to meet the needs of close to 160,000 homes in Abu Dhabi. TAQA targets a 30% of renewables in its generation portfolio by 2030, up from 5% today, and has committed to net zero by 2050. The company’s ESG and interim greenhouse gas emission reductions will be announced later this year.

TAQA is committed to continuously enhance its sustainable strategy, driven by a dedication to create societal value, to integrate sustainability into its corporate governance and operations, and to contribute as far as possible to the achievements of the SDGs by 2030.
